When Your Switchboard Needs an Upgrade

If your switchboard still has ceramic fuses, no safety switches, or you’re planning solar, air conditioning, or an EV charger — it’s time. Modern switchboards protect your home, your family, and every appliance you plug in. We’ll assess your existing board, quote the upgrade in writing, and have it done in a day.

What We Do

1

Ceramic Fuse Removal

Replace old porcelain fuses with modern circuit breakers and RCBO safety switches. Required before any solar or EV install.
2

RCD Safety Switches

Fit RCDs on every power and lighting circuit. Cuts power in 30ms if a fault is detected. Required by AS/NZS 3000.
3

Load Upgrades

Upgrade from 40A to 63A or 80A mains supply to handle air con, induction, EV charging, and solar simultaneously.
4

Solar & EV Ready

Pre-wire spare circuits and metering positions so adding solar or an EV charger later is a one-day job, not a full rewire.
5

Surge Protection

Whole-home Type 2 surge protection fitted at the switchboard. Protects every appliance from lightning and grid spikes.
6

Energex Applications

We handle the Form A paperwork and coordinate with Energex for supply upgrades — no forms for you to fill out.

What a Switchboard Upgrade Actually Involves

Most Sunshine Coast switchboard upgrades take 4–8 hours on site. Power is isolated at the meter, the old board is removed, and the new panel is wired in with modern circuit breakers, RCDs, and surge protection. We test every circuit before restoring power and provide a Certificate of Testing and Compliance for your records.

If your mains supply cable is also undersized or perishing (common on homes built before 1990), we’ll replace that as part of the same job rather than making you pay two separate call-outs.

Signs You Need an Upgrade Now

  • Ceramic fuses instead of circuit breakers
  • Breakers trip under normal load (kettle + toaster + air con)
  • Lights dim when the AC or oven starts
  • Burnt smell near the board
  • Solar, AC, or EV install quoted but blocked until board is upgraded
  • Home built before 1990 with no safety switch labels

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a switchboard upgrade cost on the Sunshine Coast?

A standard residential switchboard upgrade typically runs $1,200–$2,500 fully installed, including the new board, circuit breakers, RCD safety switches, labour, and compliance certificate. Larger homes, commercial properties, or jobs that also need the mains supply upgraded can run $3,000–$5,000+. We provide a written quote before any work starts so you know the exact number. No hourly billing, no surprise add-ons.

Do I legally need a licensed electrician for switchboard work?

Yes. Any work inside a switchboard is illegal for unlicensed persons to perform in Queensland under the Electrical Safety Act 2002. DIY switchboard work voids home insurance and creates serious fire and electrocution risk. Seascape Electrical is a licensed electrical contractor (EC 90909) with full insurance and compliance certification.

How long does the upgrade take?

Most residential switchboard upgrades take 4–8 hours on site. Power is off for 2–4 hours of that time. We schedule around your day where possible and always communicate outage timing in advance. Complex jobs with supply upgrades may take a full day.

Do I need a switchboard upgrade before installing solar?

Almost always yes. Solar installers will not connect an inverter to an old ceramic fuse board or an undersized panel because Energex connection rules require modern RCD protection. If you’re planning solar, budget for the switchboard upgrade as part of the project.

Will my insurance cover switchboard work?

Home insurance typically covers damage to electrical work performed by a licensed contractor. It does NOT cover damage from DIY electrical work, unlicensed installers, or ongoing faults in obviously obsolete equipment (like original 1960s ceramic fuse boards). Upgrading to a modern board improves your insurance position, not harms it.

Can I get the upgrade done this week?

For urgent upgrades we usually have availability within 3–5 business days. Emergency work (smoking switchboard, total power loss) is same-day. Non-urgent work is scheduled around your preferred timing.
